When I shot 1984, based on George Orwell’s book, I had to shoot a big scene at Alexander Palace in North London. We used 2000 extras, five cameras, cranes, dollys, etc...I thought “this is it!” Now I realise it isn’t. The more mediocre you are as a director, the bigger spectacle films you make.

Edmond O'Brien veste o personagem de Winston Smith na versão de 1956 (Reino Unido) de "1984", dirigida por Michael Anderson.

É outro personagem de O'Brien, Dutton Peabody, que o diz, em "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962), de John Ford (Sean Aloysius Feeney, 1895-1973), provavelmente o mais "americano" dos realizadores. A frase colar-se-ia de tal maneira ao cineasta que hoje lhe é, vulgarmente, atribuída. Boa divisa para o tipo que fazia westerns e se chamava John Ford.
